Join American mezzo-soprano Tammy Hensrud and Irish pianist Niall Kinsella for a lunchtime concert celebrating the alluring music of Kurt Weill. Programme will include his well-known songs ‘Speak Low’, ‘September Song’, ‘Youkali’ along with lesser-known gems.
Distinguished American mezzo-soprano Tammy Hensrud has graced the stages of The Metropolitan Opera, New York, Salzburg Festival and the Vienna State Opera, to name a few. This concert explores the songs of German theatre composer Kurt Weill, who had a remarkable evolution throughout his career, which began in Berlin, moved to Paris, and, ultimately, Broadway. Ms. Hensrud has become a noted interpreter of Kurt Weill’s music in the USA, having received critical acclaim for her performances in recital, cabaret and in his opera The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.

This recital celebrates the songs of Irish composer John F. Larchet (1884-1967), who was an influential figure in Irish music in the 20th Century. The complete songs were performed together for the first time recently in a project spearheaded by Irish Songmakers, and include such gems ‘A Stoirin Bán’, ‘An Ardglass Boat Song’, and ‘Padraic the Fiddilier’, performed by leading Irish singers Raphaela Mangan and Gavan Ring, accompanied by Niall Kinsella. Dr. Larchet was a teacher at RIAM and UCD for many decades and taught a generation of Irish composers.

Owen Gilhooly, one of Ireland’s finest tenors, performs a song-recital of music ‘alla Zingarese’, or inspired by the Gypsy life, with pianist Niall Kinsella. Repertoire includes Brahms’ Zigeunerlieder, Dvořák’s Gypsy Songs, and Don José’s aria from Bizet’s opera Carmen. Also joined by Irish virtuoso string players Lynda O’Connor (violin) and Gerald Peregrine (cello), piano trio will perform Haydn’s Gypsy-Trio and an arrangement of Verdi’s ‘zingarelle’ choruses from La Traviata. Be transported to the Hungary, Bohemia, Spain, Vienna and Paris of another era with this beautiful and spirited music.
